“Nothing more to add, these will compete with the best of devices in the market” says Chidi Okonkwo, General Manager, Tecno, as the “African” phone manufacturer unveils its latest innovation, the Phantom 6 and Phantom 6 Plus nick named the “Beauty” and the “Beast” respectively, in Lagos today during a media launch which held at Tecno office, Ikeja GRA.
The reveal is coming on the heels of the global launch of the two premium products which held last Sunday in Dubai, UAE signaling the brand’s official entry into the region as part of its aspiration to be “the most competitive mobile brand in the world”. The Dubai global unveil which is being discussed as a status enhancing project held at the tallest building in the world, the Armani Hotel, Burj Khalifa.
Since its inception into the African market in 2006, the brand has further demoncratised the ownership of smartphones, smart-bands and tablets, with the aim of making high-end mobile devices readily available to consumers at pocket friendly prices. To a large extent, the strategy has been working for the brand especially when some more established brands are facing tough times in the market owing to dwindling earnings.
Over the past decade, mobile phone penetration rate in Africa has risen from 6% to 80%. In line with this, Tecno Mobile has become a major driver of the growth, it services over 35 African countries controlling a market share of 41.1% and 31.1% in Tanzania and Nigeria respectively.
“We are proud of what we have been able to achieve in Africa so far and we are confident the time is right for us to duplicate the same success across other emerging markets”, says Mr. Vane Ni, Deputy General Manager and Global marketing lead, Tecno Mobile.
The Phantom 6 “Beauty” wears an ultra slim design with premium chamfered edges to become Tecno’s first dual rear camera technology- a high definition combination of 13 mega pixel auto-focus and 5 mega pixel fixed-focus cameras with LED flash.
Analysts considers the phone the slimmest Smartphone with dual rear cameras, the Phantom 6 has an expanded internal storage space, powered by 3GB RAM for smoother operations with 32GB ROM leg room, expandable to 128GB. It enjoys improved processor speed at 2.0GHz, MediaTek’s Helio P10 chipset.
“The TECNO Phantom 6 gives mobile consumers better stability, speed and possibly the best camera experience on mobile phone,” says Attai Oguche, Tecno Deputy Marketing Lead, Nigeria.
Also unveiled today just as it was in Dubai, is Tecno Phantom 6 Plus otherwise known as “The Beast” which has the credit as the fastest Deca-core Smartphone. It is the mobile maker’s latest ‘Phablet Smartphone’ targeted particularly at the upper echelon of the market. It goes for a pre-order price of N128,000 as against Phantom 6’s N88,000.
Phantom 6 Plus flaunts an impressive 6.0-inch IPS touch display and hosts the mobile brand’s first tri-fold security combination (fingerprint, eye scanner and Trustlook antivirus). It also parades the latest MediaTek Helio X20 Deca-core chipset, making the super-Smartphone one of the fastest mobile phones in the market.
Describing the product of three long years of continuous innovation, Tecno Global Marketing Lead says, “Mobile consumers in Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt and other top mobile markets in emerging economies have not seen anything like the Phantom 6 plus. This Smartphone took three years in the making and the global expertise of over five hundred engineers to deliver right on schedule”
Yea, fantastic innovation, but the the fear raging ones mind bothers on the positioning of this brand as an inexpensive brand. However, a brand going above a hundred grand cannot be seen as inexpensive. Consumers may find it hard to come to terms with this new reality. Although, the management says the company has a fairly wide range of products that cuts across different income levels and social economic classes.
Owing to the “investment” needed to procure each of these new offerings, a 3-month’sinsurance and 12 months plus one warranty package is in place for new owners. A customer who pre-orders the new Phantom enjoys the Tecno VIP card which guarantees priority service at service centres as well as some gifts which range between a Bluetooth speaker and a remote controlled Tripod stand for the phone depending on your investment. “Attractive”, you may call it!
