The Bloomberg Media Initiative for Africa (BMIA), a corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at providing some interventions in the training and retraining of financial journalists in Africa last Friday concluded a six-month’s intensive executive training programme for Intake Three.
The training programme which commenced on Monday April 11 effectively rounded off Friday having grilled participants in modules on Economics; Media Landscape; Financial Landscape and Data Analysis & Interpretation. Others courses include Accounting & Finance; Financial Markets and Public Policy & regulation.
September birthday celebrants led by Patience, Deputy Class governor during the cocktail to mark the end of the trainng programme.
With faculties drawn from the Lagos Business School; University of Lagos’ Mass Communications department and across reputable institutions such as Bloomberg, Businessday, UBA, Channels among others, accomplished professionals were on hand to share experiences and motivate participants to engage in world-class and ethical journalism such that will bring about a reorientation in the society.
While drawing the curtain on the cohort 3 training programme, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye congratulated participants who cut across the traditional and digital media platforms across the country and beyond as beneficiaries of the executive training programme, “You have what it takes to be better financial and business journalists”. He praised the team for their dedication during the course of the training.
Similarly, Prof. Leo Ukpong, programme integrator, Dr. Bongo Adi, Consortium Faculty, Lagos Business School; Cherian Thomas, Bloomberg Data Services, (India) and trainer and Vincent Nwanma, Country Programmes manager, who had kind words for the participants, urged them to go out and make the ‘change’ having been equipped with the necessary professional skills and training to do stories that move markets.
Yet some more participants out of about 50, in midst of them are Prof Leo, Dr. Bongo and our Cherian, the man of the people
With the youngest population of any region in the world, “Africa is home to many of the world’s fastest-growing economies and a rapidly growing middle class”, hence Mr. Michael Bloomberg, Founder, Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies’ searchlights on the continent to help develop financial journalists to help fuel this growth.
The BMIA initiative was launched in 2015 to support great business and finance journalism in Africa, and bring more transparency to African markets by helping improve the way governments and businesses gather and use financial data. “Better financial data and information lead to more transparency, which helps investors make better decisions, which in turn leads to economic growth and opportunity”, reckons Mr. Bloomberg.
Meanwhile, the initiative has called for nominations for the next batch (Cohort 4 Intakes) for the laudable programme which takes place simultaneously in three countries – South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria. {fcomments}
