The British Council in Nigeria marked its 80th anniversary with a celebratory event that blended camaraderie, commendations, and goodwill amid dining and celebration. This commemorative event highlights the Council’s 80 years of impact and numerous achievements over the years especially in the areas of education, art, culture and youth empowerment to the delight of over 100 guests, associates, and partners in attendance.
As part of its commitment to continued impact, the British Council unveiled a new theme, “Amplifying the Voices of the Future,” to drive its next phase of service and contribution to Nigerian communities. This theme underscores the Council’s dedication to promoting positive change, particularly among Nigeria’s youth.
In his welcome address, Acting Country Director Chilufya Besa reflected on the Council’s longstanding role in supporting Nigerian communities and young people. He stated, “The British Council in Nigeria has been at the forefront of fostering connections, empowering communities, and creating educational and cultural exchange pathways that have shaped countless lives.” He went on to express pride in “the countless young people who have become employable, business owners, job creators, and agents of change within their communities through British Council-led programmes.”
Representing the Deputy High Commissioner, Simon Field, Deputy Head of Mission, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), added, “Amplifying the Voices of the Future is especially fitting for our 80th anniversary in Nigeria, as it indicates our commitment to empowering young people, who are Nigeria’s future leaders, creators, and innovators. We remain committed to fostering deeper connections, creating opportunities for young people, and building a future that respects cultural heritage while embracing innovation and inclusivity.”
The evening featured two fireside chats focused on youth empowerment in Nigeria. The first, “Unlocking the Economic Potential of Young People Now and in the Future,” led by Brenda Fashugba, Regional Lead for Creative Economy, SSA, and Head of Arts Nigeria at the British Council, examined strategies for youth economic engagement and preparing young Nigerians for future success. The second, “Enhancing Youth Voices in Delivering Effective and Sustainable Change,” moderated by Edemekong Uyoh, Regional Head of Marketing, Cultural Engagement, SSA, emphasized the importance of youth perspectives in achieving sustainable development.
The event was further enriched by performances from spoken word artists Kehinde Adollo and King David Ayo-Loto, whose pieces reflected on the Council’s impact in Nigeria. A live painting session by celebrated artist Haneefah Adam was another highlight, with her artwork presented to Chilufya Besa as a commemorative gift.
This 80th anniversary celebration reinforced the British Council’s commitment to empowering young Nigerians and amplifying their voices for a brighter future. As the organization embarks on its next chapter, it continues to prioritize impactful partnerships, educational opportunities, and strengthening cultural ties between the UK and Nigeria.
