A delegate being restrained from assaulting another

Outside the tensed campaign of calumny and ‘demarketing’ to market, uncoordinated noise, incessant banging of tables, threats and counter threats become the order of the day at the on-going National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN) at the Premier Hotel, Ibadan.

The delegate accreditation exercise which was initially planned for between 2 – 3 hours at the maximum became protracted lasting more than five hours of tensed atmosphere of fisticuffs.

The Secretariat displays gross inefficiency with the delegates pointing accusing fingers at them as regards improper records. For instance, an highly place personality such as Peter Folikwe, Managing Director, Berger Paints, could not find his name on the accreditation list having paid the necessary dues. He is just one of the many delegates whose names were missing due to no just cause or any fault of theirs.

Another issue which kept tempers on the rise is the decision to disallow members inducted at about the last week October, from voting. The set especially those from the East wanted to vent their annoyance on one of the Presidential candidates, Rotimi Olaniyan.

Annoyed but undeterred by the gross display incompetence, disorder and immaturity by a number if the delegates and the Secretariat, Are Fatai Odesile, says is okay to happen so that members will know what they are up against.

“This will enable members to know how and who to vote for. We cannot continue the old ways. If we are saying the organization is not run well, it behoove on us to exercise our voting rights and get the right people into positions of leadership”.

According to Are Odesile who is the managing director of Grand Oak Ltd, he was at Institute of Directors (IoD) yesterday and every activity went on seamlessly without any hitch. He envisages the NIMN as the body of professionals Marketers should operate in this realm.

Wasiu Ola Aboola, Media Manager, Nigerian Breweries Plc also a delegate at the NIMN conference and AGM, laments the disorder that characterized the event. “The rowdiness is demeaning, we need to up our game, emulate associations like the IoD, NMA and the NBA”, he said.

At about 5 O’clock a semblance of sanity was restored as the new members threatening to disrupt the process was finally allow to exercise their franchise ditto other members with who were previously denied accreditation due to one flimsy reason or the other.

Findings on ground reveal Tony Agenmomen who enjoys enormous support of his former company, Nigerian Breweries supported has massive support from the delegates especially those on the corporate side as against Olaniyan’s agency background. Tony’s position may not be unconnected with he experience garnered as an accomplished Marketing professional with Nigerian Breweries. He is also said to have built bridges across industries, regulators, government and corporate world in general. As a retiree, he is thought to have better time and connection to move the industry forward.

At about 5:30pm at the commencement of the elections, Olaniyan, a candidate running against Tony Agenmomen announced his withdrawal from the race. This seen as a show of good sportsmanship attracted the applause of the entire delegates. This leaves Tony Agenmomen as the undisputable President of NIMN for the next two years. Other results will be announced after the conclusion of the voting exercise.
