TED MUKORO: THE HARD TRUTHS

It is quite erroneous to still completely believe that humans often resist change; in fact change, in every conceivable forms, is one of the many highlights that make this present generation tick.
And the change in question has nothing to do with the “Change Begins With Me” initiative, launched by the Buhari-led government on the 8th of September 2016; an initiative Nigerians vehemently condemned due to its ideological error and wrong timing.

In the words of the Pre-Socratic philosopher, Heraclitus: “it’s not reasonable to expect people to embrace unreasonable change.”

Perhaps the change happening in the offices of McCann Erickson in Japan can be termed “reasonable” because its staffers are wholeheartedly embracing it.

Few months back, McCann Erickson in Japan disrupted the status quo by creating an Artificial Intelligent (AI) robot named “AI Bot.” AI Bot was then assigned the role of a Creative Director (CD), making it the world’s first robotic creative director in advertising. Perhaps this is no longer news.

However, according to Agencyspy.com, what very recently spiced things up within the creative community was the battle that eventually erupted between AI Bot and it’s human counterpart within same agency, Mitsuru Kuramoto.

Simply put, the robot CD was pitted against the human CD.

To creatively settle the “beef,” both parties (the robotic CD and the human CD) got a brief on Clorets Mint Tab, a brand that promises “instant, long-lasting refreshment that last for 10 minutes.”  And then the epic battle began…

The age-long Man vs. Machine battle is never dying. In fact, it’s subtly getting more intense as the frontiers of Artificial Intelligence gets bigger.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is simply the algorithm that makes machines to become human-like intelligent. In 1997, an AI robot, called Deep Blue, became the first chess-playing system to mercilessly beat a human world chess champion named Garry Kasparovon. Also, around 2011, in one of America’s favorite quiz shows called Jeopardy, IBM’s question answering robot, called Watson, blatantly defeated the two greatest Jeopardy champions (humans), Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings. Likewise in China, March 2016, in an abstract strategy board game for two players called GO, a robot named AlphaGo, built specifically for the said game, ruthlessly whipped Lee Sadol, the human GO champion, by winning 4 out of 5 games, thus becoming the first computer GO-playing system to ever beat a human professional GO player.

In the light of the above facts, some McCann staffers actually expected the robotic CD to give the human CD some pretty good trashing!
Top culprits in the fueling of the age-long Man vs. Machine battle are Hollywood film producers. They consistently shoot and release films premised on the bad that could happen when machines go rogue and utilize big data to render an unpleasant judgment on humanity, as in the case of the Marvel movie, Avengers: Age of the Ultron; Columbia Picture’s Ex Machine, amongst many others. In all, humans always prevailed, somehow.

Outcome of the battle between the robotic CD and the human CD?  Of course, the human CD triumphed. Mitsuru Kuramoto’s entry won via a nationwide poll that was set up in Japan for same purpose. Click here to watch their entries.

Artificial Intelligence might be changing the quality of our daily lives: from robotic vacuum cleaners to smartphones that now come with intelligent personal assistants. Self-driving cars and trucks, delivery drones, industrial robotics, healthcare diagnostic robots, educational “systemic” applications for easy learning, video games for high entertainment, “F35 brain” for a super-proprioception flight safety, GPS, cruise controls, trackers, central locks and alarm devices, etc., nevertheless, the fact remains that, AI automations can never successfully simulate the human emotions even if they brilliantly ape human intelligence.

Great ads thrive on emotions. And as long as humans continue to monopolize the impulse of emotions, robots stand no chance in taking over our jobs. The least they could do, have been doing, and would keep doing, is to augment human efforts for faster and optimal outcomes.
