As the market experts the birth of a virile competition in the satellite TV segment, leading Direct-to-Home satellite TV operator, Multi-choice DSTV Mobile has increased the tally by launching a new product tagged Walka.
The new product, a DVB-H handheld TV device will enable DStv subscribers to watch television on the go, at anytime and anywhere within the company’s signal coverage. The move that could be seen as being aimed at further consolidating the market leadership position enjoyed by DSTV, according to the management, followed on the trail of a long line of technology innovations associated with the DStv brand. These include the Drifta, DStv Mobile (access to DStv channels via mobile phone), High Definition PVR decoders and integrated customer service tools.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the product in Lagos, General Manager of Digital Mobile Television (Nigeria) (DMTV) Limited, Mayo Okunola, said that with the new device, subscribers within DStv Mobile network coverage areas in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Ibadan, Enugu, Benin, Onitsha, Aba and Asaba would now have access to the channels on the DStv Mobile DVB-H network.
He said, “DStv Mobile is proud to once again be at the fore-front on the cutting edge of mobile technology and in responding to Nigeria’s’ increasingly mobile culture. Earlier, the Managing Director of Multichoice Nigeria, John Ugbe, had described the launch of Walka as a development that underlined the vision of the company to surround television viewers with compelling content anywhere they may find themselves.
He noted that, “whether at home, at work, at play or while sitting in traffic, we are determined to provide the avid TV viewer with varied options to catch up with breaking news, sports, current affairs and other programmes.” Also speaking at the event, the General Manager of SuperSport Nigeria, Felix Awogu, said that sport loving Nigerians would benefit immensely from the new offering.

This development according to Brandcrunch observation might be one of the ways for the current market leader to cover the ground and cement its leadership position well enough before the ravaging Airtel mobile launches it’s Direct-to-Home mobile service. {jcomments on}
